Deleting a Facebook account

I've had enough of Facebook! How do I delete my Facebook account?

There is a difference between wanting to delete a Facebook account completely and wanting to deactivate it for a period of time.

How can I deactivate my Facebook account?

If you want to just close the account but keep all of the information such as photos and videos for example, deactivating is the best option. This will mean your account is completely hidden but can be reactivated whenever you choose.

To do this, go to the Account drop-down menu in the top right-hand corner of your Facebook profile. Select ‘Account Settings' and then at the bottom of the ‘Settings' tab is ‘Deactivate account'. This will log you out of Facebook. To reactivate your account you then just log back in whenever you're ready.

How can I delete my Facebook account permanently?

To delete an account permanently, including everything stored within it is a slightly longer process. Firstly, you'll need to delete any accounts you have with websites that use Facebook Connect login.

Then you need to copy and paste this URL into your browser:

http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account

Click 'Submit' and you will then be asked for your Facebook password and to fill in a Captcha spam check by entering a series of letters that appear in the security check box.

You will get an email to the address linked with the account telling you that your account will be deleted in 14 days. If you have any interaction with that account in the 14 days though it may stop the account from being deleted so don't log-in to the account, use Facebook Connect or click on any Facebook Share or Like buttons on external sites during this time.

Deleting an account will remove everything to do with the profile and you will not be able to get any of that data back.
