Organize digital images into folders according to the date they were taken
PhotosTree is a tiny (17KB) command line tool which tries to organise a set of digital photos into folders according to the dates when they were taken. And so if you shot a set of images on 21st June 2005, for instance, the program might create the folder 2005\06\21, before copying all your photos there.
The fact that this is a command line tool does mean it's not entirely straightforward to use, but don't let that put you off. Once copied to our test folder, for instance, we were able to launch it like
PhotosTree . .
The two periods tell the program to use its current folder for both the source and destination, and with that it went to work, scanning JPEG files, looking for those with a tag to say when they were shot, and (if found) creating an appropriate folder and copying them there.
But if you need more control, then there are plenty of other options available. You can tell the program to search a complete folder tree, for instance. There are options to configure the folder naming scheme, to optionally overwrite existing files, even to decide exactly what goes in each folder: shortcuts, internet links, even hard links.
There are also some error checking issues. You must run the program with administrative rights, for instance, but if you don't there's no neat explanation - it just crashes with some horribly complicated error messages.
Once you understand how PhotosTree works, though, this shouldn't be a problem, and overall it becomes a simple way to archive your photos by date.
