Microsoft Office Web Apps go live

You can now create and edit Microsoft Office documents for free on any computer with an internet connection.

Microsoft has launched its Office Web apps, which let you create and edit Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote documents even if you don't have the software installed on your computer.

As long as you have a Windows Live ID, you can use the Office Web Apps from any internet-connected computer.

Compatible with the Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari browsers, only the basic functions of the Office programs are available.

Documents are stored on the Windows Live SkyDrive service, with 25GB of storage space available to each user.

"This release includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote. Not only do we want you to try these web apps, we also really want to hear what you think. Please use the feedback links in the web apps," Microsoft said in a statement.

The launch of the Web Apps comes after Microsoft announced that the next version of Windows Live Hotmail would let you edit Office documents within the browser.

Microsoft will also launch the full consumer version of Office 2010 on 15 June.
